Los principios que guían nuestro trabajo:

La sexualidad es un término amplio 

Entendemos la sexualidad como un término amplio de la experiencia humana que abarca el comportamiento sexual (como coger), las nociones biomédicas sobre lo sexual (como lo que les profesionales de la salud creen que es saludable o no), lo erótico (lo que atrae y mueve nuestro deseo), como una construcción cultural (lo que es o no aporapiaado segun el contexto social), cuestiones identarias como en la orientación (soy gay), y el género (soy mujer).

La sexualidad importa

La sexualidad, en todas sus manifestaciones, importa porque las personas encuentran y construyen significado a través de ella, y el poder se organiza en torno a ella. Poder entre personas, familias, comunidades, movimientos sociales, espacios biomédicos y educativos, gobiernos, violencias y más. Esto lo vemos en lo más íntimo de nuestras experiencia (como cuando dos personas tienen sexo y lo que eso significa para elles y las repercusiones sociales que puede tener), y en el nivel más macro político (como toda una cámara de legisladores puede considerar a dos personas teniendo sexo y decidir si irán o no a la cárcel por ello).

Estamos profundamente interconectades con las personas, nuestros contextos y estructuras sociales.

Nuestra programación evalúa las formas en que fuerzas estructurales como el privilegio de clase, el racismo, la transfobia, el capacitismo, la putofobia y el colonialismo dan forma al conocimiento sobre la sexualidad que a menudo se promueve a través de discursos médicos, políticos e identitarios. En línea con esta noción de interconexión, intentamos proponer acercamientos a la sexualidad construidos colectivamente entre personas que trabajan desde diversos movimientos sociales. 

Cuestionamos cómo se construye el conocimiento sobre la sexualidad

Reconocemos que el conocimiento sexual se produce a través de redes de poder y autoridad. Esto es fundamental en un campo que a menudo está despolitizado y “naturalizado” a través de los discursos científicos. Por ejemplo, en la forma en que los primeros científicos sexuales del siglo XX establecieron el estándar para la comprensión clínica de la sexualidad “normal” y “anormal”. Buscamos ofrecer herramientas a activistas, organizaciones y artistas para ayudar a profundizar sobre las capas de conocimiento que rodean la sexualidad y construir narrativas que trabajen hacia la justicia social y la liberación basadas en nuestras experiencias corporales de vida.

Creamos movimientos sostenibles frente a las violencias persistentes

Los grupos neoconservadores y anti-derechos están y seguirán estando altamente organizados y ocupando posiciones de poder. Como Vulgar, estamos interesades en construir colaboraciones entre movimientos a largo plazo para responder y anticipar las estrategias de los grupos fundamentalistas ahora y en el futuro. También creemos en establecer relaciones alegres, estratégicas y tranquilas con nuestres colaboradores a pesar de la urgencia que enfrentamos.

El placer y la creatividad son fundamentales para nuestra práctica.

Abrazamos una diversidad de marcos artísticos, corporales y académicos para comprender y comunicar el mundo social. Utilizamos métodos de facilitación creativa que incluyen performance, movimiento, juegos y conversaciones que ofrecen espacios de exploración lúdica y trabajo en equipo. Nuestro trabajo generalmente se basa en grupos con un  énfasis en llegar a entendimientos colectivos.

Colaboración intermovimiento

Vulgar es una plataforma para el apoyo y cuidado intermovimiento. Nuestro trabajo está fundamentalmente entrelazado con una diversidad de movimientos sociales que abogan por la justicia social y por nuevos horizontes sexuales, climáticos, sociales, raciales, económicos y políticos. No creemos que la sexualidad pueda entenderse únicamente como un fenómeno individual o personal. Tenemos una necesidad existencial de saber que podemos construir proyectos políticos y de amor sostenibles ahora y juntes, ya que esto apunta hacia un futuro que podamos anticipar.

Our vision

Vulgar is a bilingual sexuality education and research collective based in Mexico City. Together, we lead workshops and activist retreats, write curricula, and conduct original research on sexuality. We prioritize intermovement collaborative work with other social justice collectives including disability justice, trans justice, antiracist, and pro-sex worker groups. We use performance and arts-based facilitation as cornerstones of our work because we want to cultivate pleasurable spaces of knowledge-building and resistance! <3

organizing principles of our work:

We have a broad understanding of “sexuality” 

We understand ‘sexuality’ as a broad category of human experience that encompasses sexual behavior (as in having sex), biomedical notions of sexuality (as what doctors think is ‘healthy’ or ‘unhealthy), eroticism (as in the energies of “sexiness” and desire), as a cultural construct (as to what is considered appropriate sexual feelings and behaviors in different cultural contexts) and identitarian questions as in sexual orientation (as in “i’m gay!”), or gender (as in “i’m a woman!”). 

Sexuality matters

Sexuality, in all its manifestations, matters because people find and construct meaning through it, and power organizes around it. Power between individuals, families,  communities, social movements, biomedical and educational spaces, governments, socioeconomic processes, and more. We see this at the most intimate level (as in two people having sex in a bed and what that specific act means to each of them and the social repercussions it may have), and at the most macro-political level (as in a whole chamber of lawmakers considering two people having sex in a bed and deciding whether or not those people will go to jail for it).  

We are deeply interconnected with people, our contexts and social structures. 

Our programming assesses the ways structural forces like class privilege, racism, transphobia, ableism, whorephobia, and colonialism shape the knowledge about sexuality that is often promoted through medical, political, and identitarian discourses. In line with this notion of interconnectedness, we try to propose understandings of sexuality that are collectively constructed between people working from diverse social movements, towards liberation.

We question how knowledge about sexuality is made 

We recognize that sexual knowledge is produced across networks of power and authority. This is fundamental in a field that is often de-politicized and “naturalized” through scientific discourses. For example, in the ways that early sexual scientists of the 20th century set the bar for clinical understandings of “normal” and “abnormal” sexuality. We seek to offer tools to activists, organizations, and artists to help dig through the layers of knowledge surrounding sexuality, and build narratives that work towards social justice and liberation based on our lived corporal experiences. 

Creating sustainable movements in the face of persistent violences

Neoconservative and anti-rights groups are and will continue to be highly organized and occupy positions of power at all levels of society. As Vulgar, we are interested in building long-term intermovement collaborations to respond to and anticipate the strategies of fundamentalist groups now and into the future. We also believe in establishing joyful, strategic, restful relationships with our collaborators despite the urgency we often face.

Joy and creativity are fundamental to our practice

We embrace a diversity of artistic, embodied and academic frameworks to understand and communicate the social world. We love creative facilitation methods including performance art, movement, games, and conversation that offer spaces of playful exploration and teamwork. Our work is usually group-based with an emphasis on coming to collective understandings together.  

Cross-movement collaboration 

Vulgar is a platform for inter-movement care and solidarity building. It is for this reason that we position our work as fundamentally intertwined with a diversity of social movements advocating for climate, social, racial, economic, and political justice and possibility. We do not believe that sexuality can ever be understood solely as an individual or personal phenomenon. We have an existential need to know we can build sustainable love and political projects now and together, as it gestures towards a future we can look forward to.
